The AI era is here and the much teased AI Assistants are now available.

AI Assistants

AI is here and no amount of hiding before it will save us. We have been delaying implementing AI tools for a while. We have added LLMs.txt option as an in-between step. As the AI tools evolved, went through their hypes and controversies, we have been watching carefully and had many discussions with everyone on this topic (everyone has their opinion on this).

Early on, we decided we wanted to limit our AI tools to just assistance. We fear that the next generation of writers won’t instead be prompt engineers instead. That is why we are working on The Way of the Author.

But we can’t deny the usefulness of the AI tools and we believe that now we have the other tools to start testing it in Literary Universe. What makes Literary Universe so good for AI is that the AI has access to all the universe and story details. This allows it better to assist with basic task like adding new items into the encyclopedia based on what was written, check or consistencies and other tasks that are not easily achieved without the wider context.

That context though comes at a price the more the universe grows. As of right now we don’t offer any credits or usage for our subscribers and require that you bring your own keys for the AI services. We hope to provide more options in this regard in the near future including MCP server so that you can query your universe in your favorite application on the much cheaper subscriptions that these services offer.

A lot more to discover, but here is what we have for you today.

OpenAI, Anthropic, XAi and Google Gemini are available. With the exception of Anthropic models these are also available to generate images.

Please let us know how your usage is going. What went well and what did not work out. There is much to learn for all of us and we will keep on improving this offering based on your feedback.

Short story format

Short stories are stories of maximum 8000 words or so. They have only one chapter. For a long time this has been quiet incompatible with our system. No longer.

A new setting in the story setting allows to set short stories which will trade the usual multi-chapter look for one chapter/text. You retain all the benefits that you are used to with regular stories, it just takes away the confusion and annoyance of handling the chapter title for s short story.

Already have a short story? If it is only one chapter then you can flip the switch in settings and enjoy the new look for this. This is re-usable for other texts as well. Let us know if you are using it outside of the typical use case as we might still need to make some minor adjustments.

Encyclopedia spoilers

Per request from one of our authors we have added option to designate a field in encyclopedia as a spoiler. You can designate that a field is a spoiler and which stories (and with the long ones even a specific chapter) should the reader read first if they don’t want to get spoilers. The user can then disregard that warning and display the content. If the reader has already read the given story/chapter then the info will be shown.

This has been done a bit in haste, so in the near future it will get an overhaul when it comes to look and extension to limit visibility to fan club only.
